Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD)
The chemical composition of tropical coral skeletons is thought to reflect the environmental conditions in which the skeleton is formed. In particular the Sr/Ca ratio of the aragonite of tropical coral has been used as a proxy for past sea surface temperatures. OIM is being used to gain understanding on the growth pattern and skeletal structure of coral and their influence on chemical composition.
