Steel Tensile Sample Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD)

Maps from a steel tensile sample with very coarse grains showing austenite in a retained ferrite matrix.

The peak in the misorientation distribution function (MDF) at 45 degrees about 100 is equivalent to the Bain relation for smallest atom movement to produce a bcc structure from an fcc lattice. ([110] directions in an (001) plane of the bcc lattice align with [100] directions of the fcc lattice). The MDFs for all of the scans were quite similar to the one shown here.
