Lithium content in a lightweight MgLiAl structural alloy was mapped by the composition by difference method using the EDAX Octane Elite and Gatan OnPoint™ detectors.

Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and quantitative backscattered electron imaging were used to generate spatially resolved quantitative elemental maps of magnesium, aluminum, and, for the very first time, lithium revealing single-digit mass percentages of lithium.
