Art and Conservation
Conservation is a profession devoted to the preservation of cultural heritage for the future. Conservation activities include examination, documentation, treatment, and preventive care. All of this work is supported by research and education.
Conservators routinely use chemical and scientific analysis for the examination and treatment of cultural works. The modern conservation lab uses state-of-the-art instrumentation such as microscopes, spectrometers, and X-ray systems to better understand artistic, anthropological, and historical objects and their components. The data collected allows for interpretation that provides information to assist in deciding the conservation treatments.
